Fredrick Brennan was getting ready for church at his home in the Philippines when the news of a mass shooting in El Paso arrived. His response was immediate and instinctive. Moments before the El Paso shooting on Saturday, a four-page message whose author identified himself as the gunman appeared on 8chan. In recent months, 8chan has become a go-to resource for violent extremists. At least three mass shootings this year — including the mosque killings in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the synagogue shooting in Poway, Calif. Brennan started the online message board as a free speech utopia. But now, 8chan is known as something else: a megaphone for mass shooters, and a recruiting platform for violent white nationalists.
8chan’s new internet host was kicked off its own host just hours later
On March 15, , Christchurch, a peaceful community on the southern island of New Zealand, was hit hard by a terrorist attack. This attack was particularly bloody causing 51 dead, the highes t human cost in the history of the country. One of the specificities of this attack is the use of 8chan two times, by Brenton Tarrant the author of the attack. Initially to announce his intention to perpetrate the massacre and in a second time to share the link of the live broadcast of it.
The investigation showed not only the role played by the platform in the elaboration of the killing but also the extremist and racist ground it now constitutes. A predictable drift of a forum that had at its beginnings showed rather noble ambitions … or a guilty naivety.
Web hosting service Cloudflare has terminated its agreement with 8Chan, something of a far right free speech mecca for users who find.
An owner moderates each board, with minimal interaction from site administration. The site has been linked to white supremacism , neo-Nazism , the alt-right , racism and anti-Semitism , hate crimes , and multiple mass shootings. In the aftermath of the back-to-back mass shootings on August 3 and August 4, , in El Paso, Texas , and Dayton, Ohio , respectively, the site was taken off clearnet on August 5, , after the network infrastructure provider Cloudflare stopped providing their content delivery network CDN service.
Voxility, a web services company that had been renting servers to Epik , the site’s new domain registrar, as well as Epik’s CDN provider subsidiary BitMitigate, also terminated service. No experience or programming knowledge is necessary for users to create their own boards. Do not create boards with the sole purpose of posting or spreading such content. Brennan agreed to partner 8chan with the Japanese message board 2channel , and subsequently relocated to the Philippines in October In January , the site changed its domain 8chan.
Despite subsequently regaining the domain, the site remained at 8ch. Numerous bugs in the Infinity software led to the funding and development of a successor platform dubbed “Infinity Next”.

The successor to 8chan, 8kun, made a somewhat brief appearance on the public Internet thanks to what amounts to an attack on the Internet’s routing infrastructure. The site’s domain name server, hosted by a service called VanwaNet , offered up an Internet address for the site that was from an unallocated set of addresses belonging to the RIPE Network Coordinating Centre , the regional Internet registry authority for Europe and the Middle East.
And the host for the new site, the Russian hosting company Media Land LLC, advertised a route to that address to the rest of the Internet, allowing visitors to reach the site for a while. The advertisement of the address, made with the Border Gateway Protocol BGP , is what is referred to in the routing world as a ” bogon ” or “martian.

A mass shooting by a white supremacist at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on August 3, , shocked Americans across the nation. The horrific attack left 22 people dead and even more injured. The four-page screed was intended to provide a justification for his deadly spree. In March , Brenton Tarrant, an Australian white supremacist, allegedly posted a manifesto to 8chan before murdering 50 people at two mosques in New Zealand.
A month later, in April , white supremacist John Earnest allegedly opened fire inside a Chabad synagogue in Poway, California, killing one person and wounding three more before he surrendered. He, too, posted a manifesto to 8chan before his attack, which referred admiringly to Tarrant and to Robert Bowers, the mass shooter at a Pittsburgh synagogue who murdered 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue in October Three white supremacist manifestos.
Three killing sprees. One targeted Muslims, another Jews, the third Hispanics. What they all had in common was 8chan. In just six years, 8chan has achieved a rather unenviable reputation as one of the vilest places on the Internet.

The manifesto railed against immigrants, declaring “this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.
That massacre was followed less than a day later by a seemingly unconnected shooting in Dayton, Ohio, that left nine dead and 27 injured. The shock of the weekend’s atrocities raised questions about 8chan and its continued existence on the internet.

The far-right internet forum 8chan, which has been linked to mass shootings in the US, has lost its cybersecurity protection after its provider cut off support. In a blog post in the wake of the two shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, Cloudflare chief executive Matthew Prince said the company could no longer offer web-based support and cybersecurity protection to the site.
Mr Prince claimed the suspect in the El Paso attack had posted to 8chan before commencing the attack. We just sent notice we are terminating service for 8chan. There comes a time when enough is enough. But this isn’t the end. We need to have a broader conversation about addressing the root causes of hate online. BOSTON – The owner of the online message board 8chan says he’s headed shortly to the United States, where lawmakers want to question him on his site’s use as a megaphone by violent white supremacists. Jim Watkins, who lives in the Philippines, did not specifically say he would testify, but he tweeted portions of an email he said he had sent Tuesday to House Homeland Security Committee leaders expressing willingness to speak by phone.
The committee wants him to testify on what he has done to prevent the site from being used by extremists. Gunmen who committed similar massacres earlier this year at two New Zealand mosques and a Poway, California, synagogue also posted there. In a video he released on Tuesday, Watkins said 8chan was fully co-operating with law enforcement.
He also said that the El Paso shooter had first posted his hate-filled manifesto to Instagram and that someone else had re-posted it to 8chan. The manifesto, a PDF file containing the shooter’s name, was posted to 8chan before first reports of the massacre – and before his name was publicly known. The shooter surrendered to police after the killings.
Facebook, which owns Instagram, said the company found nothing that supported Watkins’ claim. The company also said it disabled the Instagram account associated with the shooter on Saturday, adding that the account had not been active in more than a year. Its administrator tweeted Tuesday that he was moving the site onto the darknet, an online corner of the internet hidden from normal browsing where illicit drugs are sold and criminals trade stolen credit card data. That would make it significantly more cumbersome to access – and unappealing for mass use.
But on Monday, the company that provided them with computer servers and other technical underpinnings, London-based Voxility, upended both Epik and BitMitigate by terminating its contract with them. Search Search CP24 X.

The owner of infamous imageboard site 8chan, James Watkins, is appearing today in Washington, DC to provide evidence to the House Committee on Homeland Security about the site. Though the live session will take place behind closed doors, Watkins submitted written testimony ahead of his appearance that hints at the direction the hearing—and 8chan’s future—may take. The committee requested the hearing about a month ago, following the mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, that resulted in 22 deaths.
Users with “uneducated, ill-informed, and conspiratorial opinions” are welcome to share “poorly formed opinions, popular conspiracy theories, or hateful monologues” on 8chan, Watkins said, with curation “left to thousands of moderators and fellow users with the hope that better reason and enlightened wisdom will ultimately prevail. That rule seems to be more of a loose guideline at best, as 8chan developed its initial reputation as a haven for child pornography before becoming a hotbed of harassers and home to violent white supremacist extremists.
Cloudflare, which formerly provided CDN and DDoS protection services to 8chan, dumped the site as a customer in August, with CEO Matthew Prince saying at the time that 8chan “has repeatedly proven itself to be a cesspool of hate. It managed to resurface a few days later, after securing Web services from Epik brand BitMitigate. The entities running the actual servers off of which Epik was operating, however, including Voxility, Amazon, and Linode, all said in August that 8chan’s content would not be welcome on their platforms, and the site has not returned to operation since.
The site has “limited contact with Silicon Valley technology companies or their staff,” Watkins wrote. Site administrator Ron Watkins said on Twitter in August that 8chan will remain offline at least through today, the date of the hearing, and he asked users to be “respectfully vocal” in contacting lawmakers. Cloudflare drops 8Chan. How can we make these decisions more legitimate?
Controversial imageboard 8chan has been revived under a new name, 8kun — with the front page of the site now bearing a warning that “Any content that violates the laws of the United States of America will be deleted and the poster will be banned. Launched in by Fredrick Brennan as an alternative to 4chan, 8chan had been linked to harassment campaigns, racism, misogyny, neo-Nazism, pedophilia and mass shootings.
It was also a hub for believers of far-right conspiracy theory QAnon , which claims that a secret cabal of “Satan-worshiping pedophiles” rules the world and that only Donald Trump can stop them. The founder has since expressed a desire that the imageboard be shut down. Indeed, 8chan was taken off the publicly accessible internet in August, after the alleged Christchurch, Poway, and El Paso shooters used the site to spread their manifesto or livestream.
Several companies pulled their support or services from 8chan in the aftermath, including web security company Cloudflare and domain registrar Tucows.

The site was created seven years ago by Fredrick Brennan in reaction to what he felt was onerous moderation of the image board 4chan, which itself had gained a reputation for being a cesspool of problematic content. While the number of government requests 8chan received in March may be unusual, government and law enforcement routinely request information about users and accounts from major internet platforms including Google, Twitter, and Facebook.
The reports suggest such requests are increasing and yielding more information about users.
